down the dark dark street

I live in Sheffield in a little house on a little street full of very cool shops. There is a barbershop in the front room. It's not mine. My blog is named after Funnybones. I like reading books, restoring old furniture, cooking, taking photographs, old things that are beautiful and gin.

Sadly predictable

When following a link to the UK Government’s e-petition site today (to sign the cable theft e-petition), I began to browse.

The idea is that anyone can suggest a subject for discussion via an e-petition. If it gets 100,000 signatures, then MPs will debate it in Parliament.

An excellent recent example was the Full disclosure of all government documents relating to 1989 Hillsborough disaster - which triggered a debate where MPs promised to disclose these in full.

For a snapshot of the right wing, Daily Mail reading armchair generals that regularly add to the site, here are the top 10 rejected e-petitions:

  1. bring back hanging
  2. RETURN CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
  3. Bring back National Service
  4. bring back the death penalty
  5. reinstate death penalty
  6. Make the re introduction of capital punishment unconstitutional
  7. restoring the death penalty
  8. the restoration of hanging
  9. Reinstatement of the death penalty
  10. BRING BACK HANGING

Give me STRENGTH.
